Schools in Deir ez-Zor serve more than just an educational purpose. They also provide spaces for other activities, including training courses for teaching staff. However, these facilities need rehabilitation before they can fulfil these functions properly.

One of the projects aimed at rehabilitating schools was implemented between 1 July and 11 November 2019. It included the following activities:

Rehabilitation of six schools to serve as training centres in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor:

  • al-Hasiya al-Shuhail
  • al-Hawaij al-Rifiya
  • Dhiban Girls' School
  • al-Tayana al-Wusta
  • Daranj al-Umm
  • al-Jardhi Secondary School

The rehabilitation work included repairing doors and windows, renovating sanitation facilities, and providing water tanks. Electrical installations were also repaired, and the centres were equipped with a generator, fans, a water cooler, and whiteboards. Painting work was carried out as well.

The project also included the rehabilitation of ten additional schools:

  • al-Hassan al-Saleh
  • Abriha
  • Dhiban al-Farhoud
  • South Daranj
  • East Hawi al-Jardhi
  • North Abu Humaid
  • Abu Shams Primary School
  • al-Sala
  • Shallala
  • al-Milaj al-Muhdatha

At these schools, sanitation facilities were completely renovated, water tanks were provided, doors and windows were repaired, whiteboards were installed, and electrical systems were maintained.

Yasin al-Badawi, Programme Coordinator, describes the project:

"A total of 8,638 people benefited from the project. The vast majority were students under the age of 18.

We completed the project in a remarkably short time so that the planned training courses could take place at these schools on schedule."
